Energy System Modelling and Energy Justice – Incompatible Concepts? (engl.)
The energy transition requires careful planning, as energy demand always needs to match energy supply. With the phase-out of fossil fuels, capacity and grid design becomes more important. This makes energy models widely used tools, both defining future pathways as well as near future investments.
However, these energy models are often based on techno-economic optimizations that do not meet the complex realities in which the energy transition takes place. Therefore, social aspects are often disregarded. This will inevitably lead to problems with the implementation, and might lead to concetrated burdens in certain locations or population groups. It is therefore important to consider just transition aspects of equity and justice also in energy modelling.
The workshop will give an introduction to energy modelling on day 1 (including hands on experimentation with an online tool or python), introduce different justice concepts and methods to quantify it on day 2, and go into a co-creation part on day 3, in qhich the participants will work themselves on energy justice issues they perceive.
Requirements: Rudimentary understanding of energy systems, rudimentary or advanced python skills.
Credit Points (ECTS): 1, grading possible (Participation in all 3 days plus completion of an additional task.)
Martha Hoffmann, M. Sc.
