Women´s Study Programmes
Women's studies are mainly known from the USA, where women's colleges have existed since the 19th century. But in Germany, too, there are now some women's study programmes, most of them in engineering or computer science. Here you can find an overview.
General Information on Women's Study Programmes
Women's studies have a long tradition in the USA. As early as the mid-19th century, the first women's colleges were founded to provide women with higher education. This was because women were only admitted to universities in isolated cases and were usually unable to obtain an academic degree.
In Germany, the idea of women's colleges only emerged in more recent times with the co-education debate. There are no women's colleges. But there are women's degree programmes at various universities, which we present here. The aim of these courses is to encourage women to study subjects that are still mainly chosen by men. On the other hand, these courses of study are also particularly suitable for producing self-awareness.
