Review #ifbw22

Finally Back to on-site Event!

The 22nd edition of the summer school informatica feminale Baden-Wurttemberg (#ifbw22) was a great success. It was again held at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität in Freiburg, with several hybrid offerings. The informatica feminale BW brings together female students and scientists from all computer science and computer science-related courses of study, as well as IT experts from practice. There were 100 course participants and 38 contributors such as lecturers and speakers. The women came not only from all over Germany, but also from England, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland. The team of 12 organisers even included an intern from Newfoundland.

Responsible for the organisation is the Netzwerk Frauen.Innovation.Technik (F.I.T) based at Furtwangen University. The review of a week of learning and broadening horizons is extremely positive. "Despite the high temperatures, we found the participants and lecturers to be very motivated. The opportunities to get to know each other face to face and to network in the event cafeteria and in the social programme were also intensively used and we received very good feedback from the participants," reports Susanne Köcher, project manager of informatica feminale BW.

The topics of the summer academy ranged from IT security, web programming and data analysis with Python to building pet robots with a microcontroller and a course on game development with PowerPoint. There was also a varied offer in the soft skills area with, among other things, a course on voice and body factors, a workshop on "personal branding" and individual coaching sessions.

The doctoral session, a relatively new format within the framework of informatica feminale BW, took place for the first time in presence and was also very well received by the participating female doctoral students.

The main sponsor of #ifbw22 was Mercedes Benz Tech Innovation GmbH.

When asked what the participants particularly liked about the event, they gave the following answers, among others:

"As always, the great organisation and course offerings."

"A very interesting mix of topics and events. A very pleasant atmosphere"

"The whole event felt like a protected and open space."

"Meeting women who have enthusiasm for IT. It was fascinating for me to listen to conversations about it even during the breaks."

"In general, the atmosphere. It was just nice to meet so many "strong" women with similar interests. Unfortunately, that doesn't happen so often in everyday life."

"Networking with other exciting women during the social programme as well as during the breaks is the highlight every time. Also thank you for your super organisation and helpfulness throughout the event, I didn't want for anything."

The next training weeks for women are already being planned. Firstly, the meccanica feminale, which will take place in VS-Schwenningen in February 2023, and secondly, the next informatica feminale BW, which will be offered in Furtwangen in summer 2023.
