The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the implementation of healthcare measures on an unprecedented scale and speed. The development and adoption of consumer-based digital application such as the contact-tracking apps have accelerated the current rise of digital technologies in healthcare which historically has been a slower adopter of "new tech" mainly due to regulatory and privacy concerns. In fact, today healthcare is one industry that can benefit the most from innovative thinking and human-led design principles.

In this course, design thinking is introduced as a tool to address user needs, and how to develop solutions that are tailored to them. Best practices from the industry and research-informed strategies will be shared as a means to provide participants with immediate take-aways for application to their practical work. Additionally, the course will follow experiential learning with the involvement of real users e.g. patients who can be interviewed by participants in order to ideate potential digital solutions.

The outcome of the course is to empower the participants with a key innovation methodology so they can independently:

1. Develop empathy maps for users needs;

2. Learn strategies to define key problems and ideate on solutions;

3. Explore strategies to prototype potential solutions; and

4. Use the research presented to implement best practices that support and promote understanding of the content.
