LUNCH TALK: Inclusive and Accessible Design for Web Applications (engl.)

Most websites and applications today are built with invisible barriers, meaning they are difficult to use for many people with—for example—visual impairments, cognitive impairments, or reading disorders. There is a lack of knowledge, and perhaps also a lack of the right incentives, for companies to build accessible apps. However, the landscape is changing: with the enforcement of the German Accessibility Development Act (BFSG) in June 2025, digital accessibility is no longer just a choice, but a legal requirement for many businesses. In this lecture, I will show why it matters to everyone to build accessible applications and how to do so. To make this more hands-on, I will provide examples from our company, Scieneers, where we worked on improving our chatbot application to make it more accessible and compliant with German law.

Katharina Anderer, M.Sc.

I am currently part-time working for Scieneers, a data science company, where I am involved in different projects where we build chatbot applications for various companies. At the same time, I am doing a PhD in computer science with the topic to use AI for making lectures and lecture material more accessible to blind students and students with low vision. My biggests interests right now are machine learning, large-language models, user-centered design and accessibility.
