Fachkurs: 22IF-T51 How human-centred design and data diversity are key to developing sustainable tech products (English)

Voraussetzungen: Beginner knowledge in a programming language (e.g. Python) is an advantage. Bring your own laptop.

As Walt Disney once said: ”You don't build it for yourself. You know what the people want and you build it for them.” As a corollary, in order to build sustainable tech products for people you need two key ingredients:

1) the right insights from your users based on their needs, and

2) diverse data sets that include the richness of humankind in terms of gender, ethnicity, and backgrounds - as a base to start with.

During this interactive 1-day workshop, you will be taken on a journey that looks at the aforementioned ingredients. Specifically, you will get to taste how to think about needs, problems, and opportunities identification through a quick immersion into human-centred design and design thinking methodology.

Moreover, you will get the chance to experience the effects of diverse datasets. For that purpose, you will learn to classify images with portrait photos into gender and ethnicities using a deep learning model. We will analyze the results using interpretable machine learning tools. The work will be performed in a prepared jupyter notebook, which can be used to play with the datasets and to measure the performances of the trained models. The instructors will create a stimulating interactive learning environment in which you will solve real-world challenges related to the content taught directly in this workshop. Most importantly, you will experience how to effectively combine business and design tools with algorithms that may result in a sustainable tech product.

Prof. Dr. Susanne Suter

is a Professor in Data Science at the School of Engineering at the FHNW in Windisch. She has worked with data processing, data prediction and data analysis in numerous applications since 2003, both in research and private industry. Her focus is on developing data-driven predictive systems using data from 2D and 3D vision systems and sensors. She is teaching in Bachelor degrees in Data Science (efficient machine learning, high performance computing) and Industrial Engineering (artificial intelligence and machine learning), as well as in continued education at FHNW (MAS: explainable artificial intelligence) and University of Zürich, Department for Informatics (CAS: deep learning).

Prof. Suter is committed to the advancement of women and girls in computer science with activities such as programming for girls, Women in Engineering events, and as a mentor.

Petronela Sandulache, MA CEMS, Founder and CEO

is the Founder of CorDiFio Health with the vision of raising awareness and early-detecting heart disease in women as the #1 killer of women more than all cancers combined is heart disease. With 10 years of digital consulting experience in innovation, strategy, and startups across Australia, Germany, Silicon Valley, and Switzerland, she is determined to empower every woman to be in control of her own health.

She holds a MA in International Management from the University of Sydney (Australia) and the London School of Economics (UK) – top of the Dean’s list, and a BA in Economics from the University of Rome (Italy). She thrives in a diverse and multicultural environment, and speaks 4 languages fluently.

Julia Hartmann, B.Sc.

has a bachelor degree in computer science with specialisation in data science. Currently, she is a Master student in the field of data science at the FHNW – Switzerland, where she deepens her knowledge in the field of medical image analysis. Next to her master studies she is working as a research assistant at the FHNW in the field of data science. Additionally, she is passionate about promoting science, for example as part of the “Kids@Science” weeks at FHNW.
